1996 ford contour lopes while idling and dies when put in gear unless i two-foot it.?

it runs normal and then studders out and cycles that every 5ish seconds and sometimes dies but when i put it in gear it dies unless i hold the gas and brake. it stops after the car has been driven for 15-30 min
