That is how it works in baseball, just ask Prince Fielder. Players put their time in until they are eligible for arbitration or free agency. Ryan Howard was severly underpaid until this year when he won his arbitration case. Most players would rather not sign long term deals knowing they will get more than fairly compensated once they have been in the majors for four or five years.
