What is so prestige about the AMEX GOLD Card?

What is the advantages of the AMEX Gold Card, supposedly having it mean high status? I do not see the differences between that AMEX card versus other with the exception with the Black card. I was having dinner one time and my friend paid with his AMEX Gold card and my other friend goes "wow you got the gold card"? Anyone can just apply for one? Just wondering. Thanks
